In 1959 Demetrio Zema arrived in Coonawarra from Italy to marry his fiancée, Francesca. With a great passion for wine and a family tradition of grape growing that spans generations, Demetrio Zema found that Coonawarra could provide him with the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong ‘dream’ of producing his own world class wines. The dream became a reality in 1982 when Demetrio Zema and Francesca Zema, with two sons Nick and Matt, purchased a small block of mature vines on the prized terra rossa soil in the heart of Coonawarra, South Australia. The first vintage of Zema Estate wines was made with very little equipment, a tin shed and an old milk tanker under the generous guidance of veteran Coonawarra Winemaker Mr. Ken Ward. Twenty five years on, Zema Estate has gained a national and international reputation as one of Australia’s pre-eminent wine producers. This success is largely attributed to the consistency of the wines and the family’s commitment to traditional vineyard practices; of dry land viticulture and hand pruning – methods which produce intense, rich fruit of the highest quality.
